All Abilities Playground – A park for everyone
The Fairy Godmothers main mission is to establish an all abilities playground in North West Tasmania. An inclusive playground where children of all abilities can play alongside each other.
When the organisation was founded in 2013, a clause was added to the constitution
- To raise money to provide an accessible playground to be established in the North West Tasmania that can be used by both able and disabled children
Every child has a right to play and have fun. Play is a fundamental part of childhood, it is how we develop, grow and learn. Unfortunately, the play spaces available on the North West Coast of Tasmania do not meet the needs of the whole community but The Fairy Godmothers have managed to sprinkle their magic and ensure all children have the same opportunity for social inclusion through play.
After pledging their commitment to establish an inclusive and accessible playground for children of all abilities, The Fairy Godmothers went to work flapping their wings and waving their wands, approaching many councils and municipalities with the hope that one of them would allow the construction of this amazing project on their land.
In March 2015, the Waratah Wynyard council gave in-principal support of land and later, as part of their Open Space, Sport and Recreation Plan, announced that the playground would be constructed at the Anzac Park in Somerset.
The Fairy Godmothers had the intention of working extremely hard, obtaining and raising the money required to turn this dream into a reality. On March 27th 2019 Senator Steve Martin was able to sprinkle some magic of his own. He made the outstanding announcement of funding $1.36 million for the construction of the all abilities playground at Anzac Park, Somerset.
